Opened in 2016 the Brookfield Wastewater Plant was constructed to comply with state and federal wastewater discharge standards, meet the changing needs of the community, and reflect the city’s efforts to protect streams and groundwater in the area. Designed to process 1 mission gallons of wastewater a day and operate 24 hrs a day 7 days a week using what is known as an Activated Sludge Process. The plant performs 4 main functions:
- Remove solids such as plastics and paper
- Reduce organic matter and pollutants using naturally occurring beneficial bacteria
- Disinfect using UV radiation to deactivate pathogens
- Restore oxygen to ensure the water returned to our waterways has enough oxygen to support life
