Mayor / City Council

Overview

Brookfield is governed by the City Council/City Manager form of government. The council members are elected at-large by the registered voters of the city. The city council elects the mayor and mayor pro-tem from its members. City council members serve three-year terms. These terms are staggered and a city council member election is held each year in April. A city council member must be 21 years of age and be a resident of the city for one year prior to filing for the office. Contact the city clerk for other requirements.

The city council represents the city as its political leadership. The council determines:

  • city policies
  • standards of service
  • adopts and amends city ordinances and resolutions
  • determines through the annual budget how finances are to be spent and for what purposes
  • determines the levying of taxes
  • approves contracts, agreements, and bids
  • appoints citizens to various advisory boards and commissions

Brookfield Mayor

The mayor is the Chief Elected Official of the City and is elected by a vote of the City Council. He (she) presides over all meetings of the City Council and is recognized as the official head of the City for ceremonial purposes. For legal purposes, the mayor is recognized by the courts for the serving civil process and by the Governor for the purpose of martial law. The mayor executes contracts and legal instruments on behalf of the City and votes on all issues.
