Providing clean and safe drinking water is a top priority for the City of Brookfield. Each year, the water system is carefully tested and monitored in accordance with standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency. The 2025 report confirms that Brookfield’s water meets all required safety standards, and no violations were recorded during the calendar year.
Brookfield’s drinking water comes from surface water sources, including Brookfield Lake, Yellow Creek, and Raw Water Storage Reservoirs 3 and 4. As water moves through the environment, it can naturally pick up minerals and small amounts of substances. This is why regular testing and treatment are essential to maintaining high water quality.
The report includes detailed results for a variety of tested substances. These include naturally occurring minerals such as barium and fluoride, disinfection byproducts formed during treatment, nutrients like nitrate, and total organic carbon. Lead and copper are also monitored at the household level. All regulated contaminants were found to be within safe limits established by federal and state guidelines.
Although Brookfield’s water system meets all standards, it is important to understand that lead in drinking water typically comes from household plumbing rather than the water supply itself. Testing showed lead levels below action thresholds. Residents can take simple steps to reduce potential exposure, such as flushing taps before use or using certified filters if needed.
In addition to required testing, Brookfield also performs optional monitoring for secondary substances that may affect taste, odor, or appearance. These results help provide a more complete picture of overall water quality and are included in the report.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about their water system. Anyone with questions about the report or local water quality can contact the Brookfield Public Water System at 660-258-7442.
