Lead Water Service Lines

Lead Water Service Lines – Important Information

Recently, letters were sent to residents regarding lead water service lines. This information is part of a mandatory national lead service line inventory required by federal law. Communities are required to notify residents about the known or potential material of their water service lines.

Why this inventory matters

  • The City is using this inventory to help qualify for state and federal funding to replace the city-owned portion of water service lines.

  • The city-owned portion runs from the water main to the water meter.

Property owner responsibility

  • The homeowner or landlord is responsible for the portion of the service line that runs from the meter into the home.

  • The only exception is when the water meter is located inside the home. In those cases, the City will work to relocate the meter outside of the home if and when funding becomes available.

Understanding your letter

  • If your letter is marked “Confirmed Lead Service Line,” this determination was based on information retrieved from city records. These records may not be 100% accurate.

  • If your letter is marked “Unknown – Possibly Lead,” the City does not have records for your service line. In these cases, the line will need to be exposed to determine the material.

    • This inspection will be completed at no cost to the homeowner.

Important to know

  • Homeowners are not required to replace their portion of the service line unless they choose to do so at their own expense.

The City appreciates your cooperation as we work to meet federal requirements and pursue funding opportunities to improve water infrastructure for our community.
